Need to Re-calculate Smallholders’ Plantation: Who belongs to 3 Million hectares?

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - General Secretary of Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS), Mansuetus Darto said Ministry of Agriculture released that palm oil plantations in Indonesia laid about 16,38 million hectares. About 6,7 million hectares were cultivated by the people (smallholders).

The data which is matched to the data published by Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative (SPOI), is categorized that smallholders that cultivate palm oil plantations less than 25 hectares just covered 1,2 million hectares. 713 thousand hectares were illegally conversed in 1990 to 2019. While medium to big category laid about 2 million hectares within more than 25 hectares. It means if in total, plasma and independent smallholders’ plantations just reached 3,9 million hectares.

For all these years, 6,7 million hectares were people’s plantations within less than 25 hectare – ownership. But the field facts do not show.

He also said, the independent smallholders rarely conduct partnership with palm oil plantation companies that delivered low productivity because the cultivation is not in good agricultural practices.

They have to sell their fresh fruit bunch to middlemen or loading-ramp by the street by saying that it is faster and easier to get cash. But if referring to Regulation of Minister of Agriculture Number 1 / 2018, the smallholders are obliged to conduct partnership with palm oil plantation companies.

They implement environmental practices just like the members of SPKS conduct in cooperation with HSCA to develop approach for them according to forest protection management plan. (T2)
