Time for the Government to Improve Palm Oil and Fertilizer Governance: Revoke CPO Export Ban

InfoSAWIT, ROKAN HULU – After Indonesia faced economic issues, such as, rare and expensive palm cooking oil, and rare biodiesel some time ago, Chairman of Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS) District of Rokan Hulu, Riau Province, Yusro Fadly said, this was not the good thing because Indonesia is the biggest crude palm oil (CPO) producer in the world and CPO is the material to process palm cooking oil (and biodiesel).

He thought, the expensive palm cooking oil made the people not only as the victims but also sacrificed General Director of Foreign Trade Ministry of Trade and three big palm oil companies.

Many get panic for the expensive palm cooking oil. There had been substitutions of regulation of minister of trade and followed by CPO and its derivative export ban by President Joko Widodo on 28 April 2022.

He hoped, this would be the start to improve palm oil governance from the upstream to downstream sectors. “It is the time that every stakeholder cooperate to get the fair regulation to improve palm oil governance in the future,” Fadly said to InfoSAWIT, Thursday (12/5/2022).

The latest situation is chronic because some mills do not buy fresh fruit bunch (FFB) from the smallholders. He thought, if this runs for too long, many regions where the people depend on palm oil sector would get the impacts, such as in Sumatera namely Riau, and in Kalimantan.

“As the smallholders in SPKS, we do hope, President Joko Widodo would evaluate this condition and could immediately revoke export ban which he instructed some time ago,” he said.

He continued besides the governance, the smallholders are difficult to buy fertilizers, namely the independent ones. When FFB got more expensive up to 200%, the fertilizers did too up to 300%. “Unfortunately, there is no explanation still both from the government and the institutions that manage/produce the fertilizers about why they are expensive,” Fadly said.
