Indonesian Legislators: Sad to know General Director of Ministry of Trade Involved in Palm Cooking Oil Case

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Member of Commission VII Indonesian Legislators, Mulyanto was sad to know the arrest of General Director of Foreign Trade Ministry of Trade, and three other suspects from private plantation companies by the Attorney.

He thought, it was suspected before. There might be illegal exports of palm cooking oil. The evidence is that palm cooking oil was difficult to get and buy and it was very expensive or more than the highest retail price. “We do not think if the case involved the person as level as a general director. It is so bad,” he said, as quoted from Parlementaria, Tuesday (19/4/2022).

He also mentioned, from the case, it is now known, giant palm oil companies also break the law to get more profits. It is not too much to say if there is assumption that the case always happens. It is like ice mountain phenomenon.

That is why he hoped, there would be regulation and firm sanction from the government - not to the person only but also to the companies. The case revealed that one blunt policy must have the factors, such as, corruption which was done by policy makers behind.

“It is difficult for us to get effective policies if the official in the highest level, such as, general director did corruption. If they are proven, the law officers should firmly sue them. This would be the lesson for other officials,” he said.

As member of Board of Legislation in Indonesian Legislators, Mulyanto encouraged the government to clean up the bureaucracy in the future and should consider intervention system in premium palm cooking oil governance.

“In order not to get the same thing like this – let the market determine price mechanism (which makes palm oil very expensive). The government should re-manage premium palm cooking oil governance to deliver profits for the people in economic price,” he said. (T2)
