Palm Oil Biodiesel Development Would Adopt Sustainable Principles

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Palm oil biodiesel development in Indonesia plays strategic roles to deliver positive impacts in many aspects. Biodiesel implementation in this country leads Indonesia as the pioneer to advantage biodiesel which until now reaches 30% (B30) in 2020.

In aviation world, flight test using bio – aviation turbine (bioavtur) w,4% ran successfully. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resource, Arifin Tasrif told at 3rd Palm Biodiesel Conference that included in series of Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) 1 Presidency G20 Indonesia.

"In 2021, the economi value from B30 implementation reached more than US$ 4 billion and successfully decreased green-house gas emission up to 25 million CO2e," Arifin said in Yogyakarta, Thursday (24/3) as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT.

He continued biodiesel mandatory program that involved multi-stakeholders has challenges as well. “Before implementing it, it needs to confirm that the program fulfilled three major criteria, such as, good in technique, economic reliability, politically accepted. It needs everyone’s commitment,” he said.

In the future, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource would implement sustainability indicators, which cover economy, social, and environmental. In 2022 the ministry starts implementing those in biodiesel program voluntarily in downstream sectors.

“We hope that in this very short, every sustainability indicators to biodiesel program can run well both in upstream and downstream sectors,” Arifin said.

Biodiesel development will not stop in B30 only but the ministry planned to increase biodiesel mixture from green fuel. Until now the comprehensive study is running, such as, preparing economic technology, regulation, incentive, infrastructures, product quality standards, and supporting industrial development.

The government successfully did flight test by using bioavtur 2,4% as the way to reduce emission in flight sector.

“About the concern of The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to reduce emission in international flight, the government and other related stakeholders successfully did flight test by using bioavtur 2,4%. This multiplied our trust and spirit to get commercial bioavtur,” he said. (T2)
