It is Time for Smallholders to Act; Narno & Rukaiyah Rafiq Are BOG RSPO

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – In the 18th General Assembly (GA18) of Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) members in the early of December 2021, Chairman of Yayasan Forum Petani Sawit Berkelanjutan Indonesia (Fortasbi) who is also as Group Manager of Asosiasi Swadaya Amanah, H. Narno and Principal of Petani Fortasbi of Gapoktan Tanjung Sehati, Rukaiyah Rafik were elected as Board of Governors (BOG) RSPO who represent independent smallholders.

Narno and Rukaiyah got 31 votes or 81,58%, defeated two other couples, they were Bernadius Steni of Koperasi Sawit Bangkit and Sartono S. PKP from Badan Usaha Milik Desa Karya Mandala Makmur that got 6 votes or 15,79%, and other couple from Malaysia which was FELDA, that proposed Nurul Hasanah Ahamed Hassain Malim and Ismail Samingin that got 1 vote or 2,63%.

This is important for the winner - Narno and Rukaiyah Rafiq who is familiarly known as Uki because for the very first time, independent smallholders from Indonesia could be BOG RSPO.

And the work will be significant for they will be representing smallholders all over the world. The vote to formulate every policy will be conducted by BOG.

As quoted from Fortasbi, there have been 90 independent groups that have become RSPO members. Uki told, this is a history for they are elected. Smallholders could struggle in the world stage.

“This is history for Indonesian independent smallholders. For all these years, we fought as members but now we will be always fighting more to reveal more,” she said.

She also mentioned, the achievement is the proof to the world that independent smallholders are not the weak ones or have no capability. “Independent smallholders dedicate to the world that they want to be leader to protect climate and recover the nature,” she said. (T2)
