Palm Oil Cultivation in Hilly Areas to get High Production

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Cultivating the areas within hilly contour is not the same with the flat land. It needs to pay attention to the delimiter and deduction factors to cultivate in the hilly areas. The delimiter factors are high erosion, the high flow in the surface, the low soil infiltration, the low top soil, and the less organic material.

To anticipate those, it needs innovation, such as, making the contour terrace, circle areas around the trees, ‘v’ lining (not straight lining).

Then it needs to notice the progeny in specific (morphology, tree per hectare), make the silt pit and biopore, then make focal feeding, empty bunch application, plant the nephrolepis (LCC), rain harvesting (cutting side drain, RSP) and U-Shape Frond Stacking.

There are five things in the focus of Best Management Practices (BMP), such as, water and soil conversion, do vegetative management of land canopy, implement the rain harvest and modify the micro relief.

The second is the fertilization management by organizing the fertilizer, the system of destruction, the method of fertilizer application. The third is hilly management by mapping the hilly areas, making the way and zig-zag.

The fourth is the trough management by making inventory and index number, mapping manger, and monitor the improvement of watery soil. The fifth is the harvest management. In general, it usually implements the harvest organization, destruction (5 systems) and transporting the fresh fruit bunch (FFB).

By implementing BMP, Zazali continued, FFB in the hilly areas belonging to PT Bumitama Gunajaya Agro in Central Kalimantan, in some blocks planted in 1999 – 2000 produced 29,8 tons/hectare in average.

“The slope in the plantations is about 8 – 30% within the rain about 2.953 mm/year (the average in ten years or from 2008 – 2018),” he said. (T2)
