Palm Oil Is Free from Child Labor

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Minister of Labor Indonesian Republic, Ida Fauziyah planned that palm oil plantations are free from child labors. She was virtually saying that on Wednesday (22/12/2021) and involved many stakeholders both from International Labor Organization (ILO), districts, and Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA).

In the meeting, Ida explained that the world and national agenda cover to minimize numbers of child labor, while in Indonesia in 2030, our country will be free from child labors.

The idea ‘Sawit Bebas Pekerja Anak’ is one important agenda. This is the same with what Indonesia does to realize sustainable palm oil mandated in President’s Regulation No. 44 / 2020 about Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) and President’s Regulation No. 6 / 2019 about Rencana Aksi Nasional Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan (RAN KSB).

Coutry Director ILO Indonesia, Michiko Miyamoto in his remarks appreciated palm oil companies joining in IPOA for the collaborative action and initiation for it is significant to eliminate child labor specifically in agricultural sector.

“I appreciate the good initiative including the good progress to eliminate child labor. Today I do welcome the progressive and collaborative efforts led by Ministry of Labor and other related stakeholders, civil organizations, and other stakeholders, in this case, IPOA,” Michiko said.

Chairman of IPOA in Labor, Sumarjono Saragih said, his side will always exist and commit to realize palm oil plantations in Indonesia are child friendly.

“As corporate or company, we obey every regulation that forbids child labor. IPOA is open and in collaboration with others to realize Indonesia is free from child labor namely in palm oil industrial supply chain,” Saragih said.

He also mentioned, this is the same with one goal of palm oil plantation companies to realize sustainable palm oil in Indonesia. (T2)
