FGD Sawit Berkelanjutan Vol. 11: 5 Significant Points to ISPO

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Many stakeholders do sustainable palm oil practices since 2011 according to Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO). As the regulation, ISPO keeps developing and being revised until President’s Regulation (PR) No. 44 / 2020 about Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification System was published with the technical regulation in Regulation of Minister of Agriculture No. 38 / 2020 about Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Plantation Performance.

Director of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk., M Hadi Sugeng who is also as Head of ISPO Implementation in Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA) Pusat said, there are five significant points in ISPO substitution according to PR 44/ 2020. The first is every planter should get ISPO certificate after 5 years the regulation was announced. PR 44 / 2020 was still voluntarily implemented.

The second, it does not differentiate plasma smallholders’ principles and criteria with independent smallholders. They were different in the previous regulation. The third, ISPO certification will be published by certification institution and officially validated by leader of certification institution. It was published by ISPO Commission.

The fourth, ISPO institution, which is, steering board is from Coordinator Ministry; ISPO Committee is Minister of Agriculture. But in the previous, there were Commission, Secretariat, and assessment team in ISPO. “The fifth, ISPO Principles and Criteria should list transparency aspect. It was not regulated,” Sugeng explained.

According to IPOA, by September 2021, ISPO certificate that IPOA members got reached 542 certificates; ISPO certificate for non – IPOA member reached 275 certificates; and smallholders got 24 certificates or about 841 certificates in total.

To accelerate ISPO implementation, Hadi continued, IPOA did some, such as, ISPO coaching and clinic as the Regulation of Minister of Agriculture No. 11/2015, It was running in 11 branches of IPOA that covered 349 companies and 631 men in 2018 – 2020, It was running for IPOA members and non-members.

“We did cooperate with ISPO Commission Secretariat and involved related instances from regional governments,” he said at Focus Group Discussion (FGD) SAWIT BERKELANJUTAN VOL 11, with the theme “Minyak Sawit Sebagai Minyak Nabati Berkelanjutan Terbesar Dunia”, that InfoSAWIT virtually conducted, Thursday (9/12/2021).
