Expensive Fertilizers, SPKS Tanjabarat Produced Organics

InfoSAWIT, TANJUNG JABUNG BARAT – Smallholders joining Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS) in Tanjung Jabung Barat (Tanjabarat), Jambi Province keep innovating to support other members in sustainable palm oil practices in Indonesia.

They encouraged other members to take advantages on organic fertilizers in palm oil cultivation and others, Sunday (21/11/2021)

Chairman of SPKS Tanjabarat, Aleks Simamora said, his side produced organic fertilizers in Village of Tanjung Bananak, Sub district of Merlung in cooperation with Koperasi KSP Mandiri which is also developed by SPKS.

The training to produce organic fertilizers is about to enable smallholders to minimize chemical fertilizer use in palm oil plantations because chemical fertilizers are too expensive and too difficult to get in many markets.

“They are learning how to produce organic fertilizers by advantaging materials around them, such as, cow feces which are not maximally used.

Simamora also mentioned, besides direct training, organic fertilizer method was conducted in one spot as the same learning. It is part of cooperation between SPKS and Yayasan Inobu to encourage them to be able to mitigate climate change by advantaging local knowledge.

Manager of Koperasi KSP, Vincen Haryono said that the training is about to get knowledge transfer by the union. His side saw opportunity to produce organic fertilizer and good because there are many cow and goat breeders in the village which the feces could be produced to be organic fertilizers

“We are having smallholders replanting program and the smallholders plant intercrops in their areas, such as, corn and fruits,” Vincen recently said to InfoSAWIT.

He also mentioned, the smallholders need lots of fertilizers. This is also the reason to encourage them using organic fertilizers to save production costs. (T2)
