InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – After working in the palm oil industry for decades both globally and nationally, Derom Bangun shared his experiences and stories in a memoir titled ‘Memoar Duta Besar Sawit,’ or Memoirs of a Palm Oil Ambassador launched on September 27, 2010 in Balai Kartini, South Jakarta.

At the event, then Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that he has known Derom Bangun ever since he was Minister of Industry and Trade during Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur’s Presidency in 2000. At the time, Kalla asked Bangun to find a solution for Inddonesian palm oil exports which were being disrupted by diesel imports. The Netherlands government then temporarily halted CPO exports from Indonesia.

“I chose Derom because he was outspoken in almost all of our meetings and he understands (the) palm oil (industry) in detail. I thought he was very smart,” Kalla said during the event.

Kalla said that the book described the journey of Derom Bangun in three sections. First as a  stakeholder; the second, his experience in world and national palm oil industries; and the third, his ideas to advance palm oil industries nationally.

“The strength of this book is not just a biography, but a record of the experiences of someone who is consistent and focused on one field. So this book is like a teacher where we can find out how the palm oil industry is developing in Indonesia,” said Kalla.

In the foreword to the book, Derom Bangun said that he wrote the book because of the encouragement of friends and the idea to share his unique and long experience in the palm oil industry sector. However, he said, this book was made so as not to be boring, so there are some parts of the writing that are light, and some parts that are more serious.

“But like a memoir, I also wrote stories about (my) family life and (my) children. It can be said that this book is a record of my life's journey,” said Bangun.

The title of Ambassador of Indonesian Palm Oil or Mister of Indonesian Palm Oil is appropriate for Derom Bangun. Of course, this call refers to his work and contribution to the development of the Indonesian palm oil industry.

The former Director General of Plantations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Achmad Mangga Barani acknowledged Derom Bangun's expertise in diplomacy to defend the interests of Indonesian palm oil. That's why it is appropriate that Derom bears the nickname of Ambassador of Mobile Palm Oil. (T1)
