InfoSAWIT, BOGOR – In a modest workshop in Bogor, the journey towards a green industry in Indonesia continues to make strides. Under the leadership of Andika Kristinawati, CEO of PT Interisti Material Maju, empty palm oil bunches (TKKS), often regarded as waste, are being transformed into high-value products: eco-friendly motorcycle helmets.
These are not just ordinary helmets. This product is made with added TKKS fibers that have undergone extensive research since 2014 by Dr. Siti Nikmatin and her team. Initially, they studied kenaf and rattan fibers before discovering the promising mechanical strength of palm fibers.
"Tests we conducted in 2015-2016 showed that TKKS fibers are highly suitable for use, even in automotive applications," Andika told InfoSAWIT.
Palm oil helmets began commercial production in late 2017 and have been steadily growing since. Although the production process is challenging—only 20 kilograms can be used from 100 kilograms of TKKS—Andika and her team remain determined. The high moisture content in palm fibers leads to significant shrinkage during drying, making efficiency a key focus in their production process.
As a small and medium enterprise (SME), PT Interisti Material Maju still relies on a phased strategy for the drying process. However, this has not hindered their progress. Tens of thousands of palm oil helmets have been marketed across various regions in Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke. The helmets even showcased their potential on the international stage at an exhibition in Germany, highlighting the capabilities of local green products. (T2)
