InfoSAWIT, PAPUA SELATAN – The forest, land, and agriculture (FLAG) sector is the second-largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions globally, following the energy and industrial sectors, accounting for 22% of total emissions. However, this sector is also one of the most affected by climate change. Recognizing this, several companies in the FLAG sector have begun taking concrete steps to reduce their emissions, including Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group.
TSE Group, which comprises PT Tunas Sawa Erma, PT Berkat Cipta Abadi, PT Papua Agro Lestari in South Papua, and PT Gelora Mandiri Membangun in North Maluku, has officially joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). SBTi is a global program that helps companies set science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. By joining this initiative in 2023, TSE Group reinforces its commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
Luwy Leunufna, Director of TSE Group, revealed that the company has developed a roadmap to achieve this target. Key steps include the construction of Biogas Power Plants at five locations, the use of electric vehicles (EVs), transitioning from biodiesel to biogas and solar power, and replacing chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers.
"All these steps will be implemented gradually but consistently. We hope that by 2040, the results will start to be visible, and TSE can achieve Net Zero Emissions," Luwy stated in a statement to InfoSAWIT on March 21, 2025.
The joining of TSE Group with SBTi marks a new chapter after the company's roadmap was approved by SBTi on February 13. On its official website, SBTi lists TSE Group's short-term and long-term targets. The short-term target includes an absolute reduction of 58.8% in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2034 compared to 2022. Meanwhile, Scope 3 emissions are targeted to decrease by 35% in the same period.
For the long term, TSE Group is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2050. The company also emphasizes its commitment to not engaging in deforestation across its entire commodity supply chain. (T2)
