InfoSAWIT, TANJUNG REDEB – The presence of palm oil mills in Berau Regency has brought economic benefits to the surrounding community, both through job creation and business opportunities for palm farmers. However, the issue of waste from mill operations has also become a serious concern for the government and the legislature.
Fasra Wisono, a member of Commission II of the Berau Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), reminded the local government to be more stringent in monitoring the management of palm oil mill waste, particularly those operating in Segah District. He emphasized that poorly managed waste could harm the community and pollute the environment.
“We appreciate the company's contribution to the local economy. However, waste management must also be a priority. We cannot allow production to run smoothly while the consequences pollute the environment and endanger residents,” said Fasra, as quoted by InfoSAWIT from kaltimkita.com on Tuesday (March 4, 2025).
The Democratic Party politician urged companies to take greater responsibility for environmental aspects, not just focus on production. He noted that liquid waste from palm oil mills that is not properly managed could contaminate soil and water, ultimately affecting public health and the sustainability of palm farmers' businesses.
He also encouraged relevant agencies to conduct regular monitoring to ensure that no pollution occurs. “Currently, there have been no complaints from the community, but we should not wait until a major problem arises. Monitoring and periodic assessments must be conducted to prevent pollution risks,” he asserted.
Fasra hopes that the synergy between the government, companies, and the community can be enhanced to maintain a balance between economic benefits and environmental sustainability. “If all parties perform their roles well, the palm oil industry in Berau can develop sustainably without harming the community,” he concluded.
