CEO of Sinar Mas Agribusiness & Food, Franky Widjaja: Indonesia Plays a Key Role in Global Sustainable Palm Oil

InfoSAWIT, SANUR – Chairman and CEO of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, Franky Oesman Widjaja, emphasized the importance of transforming towards climate-positive agricultural practices in his speech at the 7th International Conference of Oil Palm and Environment (ICOPE) attended by InfoSAWIT in Bali on Wednesday (February 12, 2025). He stated that sustainability, education, and responsibility are key factors that benefit Indonesia and the world.

Franky explained that Indonesia's palm oil industry plays a significant role in both the national and global economy. He revealed that this sector contributed USD 47 billion to Indonesia's GDP in 2024 and created jobs for around 70 million people. "Palm oil not only contributes to global food security but also plays a role in industrial and energy applications," he said.

Furthermore, Franky stated that the President of Indonesia has designated the palm oil industry as a strategic sector in his vision. He is optimistic that the target of 8% economic growth over the next five years can be achieved through sustainable and inclusive management. "Indonesia has become one of the largest economies in the world based on purchasing power parity. This is a good sign for our future growth," he added.

In his speech, Franky also emphasized the importance of sustainability in the palm oil industry. He mentioned that palm oil has advantages over other vegetable oils due to its high productivity and lower carbon footprint. According to him, the industry must continue to prioritize sustainable practices to ensure food and energy security, not only for Indonesia but for the world.

To address global sustainability challenges, Franky stressed the need for an inclusive growth model. This model has been implemented since 2017 through partnerships between the private sector, government, and palm oil farmers. "Palm oil farmers who adopt good agricultural practices have shown productivity levels comparable to large companies," he explained.

Franky urged all stakeholders to continue implementing inclusive growth models to strengthen global food security and the plant-based energy industry. He emphasized that collaboration between the government, industry, academia, and civil society is key to creating a future that balances economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social welfare.

"We must show the world that Indonesia is a solution to global sustainability challenges. With close cooperation, we can create economic growth that aligns with environmental preservation and social welfare," he concluded. (T2)
