Kalimantan Community Innovation: Palm Oil Mushrooms, a Solution for TKKS Waste Producing Nutritious Food

InfoSAWIT, PALANGKA RAYA – Amid the debate over the environmental impact of palm oil plantations, local communities in Kalimantan have introduced an inspiring innovation. The empty fruit bunch waste from palm oil (TKKS), which was often discarded or burned, is now transformed into a growing medium for producing palm oil mushrooms, a highly nutritious food source.

Palm oil mushrooms, a type of oyster mushroom, thrive in TKKS after harvest. Besides their soft texture and distinctive savory taste, these mushrooms are rich in protein, fiber, and various essential minerals, making them a healthy and low-fat food alternative.

Eko Priyanto, a palm oil farmer from Kotawaringin Barat Regency, explained that palm oil mushrooms are increasingly popular due to their taste and benefits. "We utilize the empty palm bunches that were previously burned or discarded, making this a solution for plantation waste while also increasing our income," Eko stated, as reported by InfoSAWIT from KBRN RRI on Tuesday (January 28, 2025).

He also added that palm oil mushrooms can be processed into various dishes, such as soups, satays, and chips. This innovation has attracted the attention of local entrepreneurs in Central Kalimantan, who are beginning to develop processed products based on palm oil mushrooms, such as meatballs and shredded mushrooms. These products are now marketed not only locally but have also penetrated the national market.

With its significant economic potential, the palm oil mushroom innovation opens new opportunities to maximize the added value of palm oil plantations. In addition to providing additional income for the community, cultivating palm oil mushrooms also helps reduce the environmental impact of palm oil waste, making it a more environmentally friendly solution.

This effort demonstrates that with creativity and innovation, palm oil waste, which has long been a problem, can be transformed into high-value products. Palm oil mushrooms not only serve as a new source of income but also represent a tangible step by the Kalimantan community in supporting sustainable plantation waste management. (T2)
