Mass Burning of Thief's Car in Kuansing After Palm Oil Theft Incident

InfoSAWIT, KUANTAN SINGINGI - An incident of car burning occurred in Sukamaju Village, Singingi Hilir, Kuantan Singingi (Kuansing), Riau, after a mob reacted angrily to the theft of palm oil belonging to a farmers' group. The event took place this morning around 6:15 AM in the area of the Sukamaju Village Cooperative (KUD).

Sukamaju Village Secretary Nanang confirmed the incident. According to him, the perpetrator, identified by the initials MS, is a local resident and one of the harvesters at KUD. "This individual has long been suspected. Each time he harvested, palm fruit was often reported missing. Finally, today he was caught," said Nanang, as reported by InfoSAWIT from detikcom on Sunday (January 19, 2025).

In the theft, MS used a new minibus to transport the stolen goods. Evidence in the form of fresh fruit bunches (TBS) of palm oil was found in the vehicle, with a total weight estimated at nearly one ton.

"The stolen palm fruit belongs to the community members who are part of KUD. This is indeed the palm oil harvested by the farmers' group," added Nanang.

After MS was secured by security personnel and KUD management, the gathered crowd immediately moved to the vehicle still located in the palm oil plantation area. The emotions of the residents escalated, leading to the car being burned on the spot.

KUD management explained that MS had long been suspected of frequently hiding harvested fruits. The farmers' group eventually implemented tighter surveillance until the perpetrator was caught red-handed today.

"He often hid the harvested fruits. The farmers' group members had suspected him, and this time it was proven," said Nanang.

Local police have been informed about the incident. As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the authorities regarding the follow-up actions against the perpetrator or the mob involved in the car burning.

This incident reflects the high level of anger among farmers towards the ongoing palm oil thefts in the area. Palm oil is a primary commodity for the residents of Sukamaju Village, and such thefts directly impact their income.

With this event, the community hopes for decisive action from the authorities to protect the rights and hard-earned results of the farmers. (T2)
