Meanwhile, Reuters reported that palm oil futures prices on the Malaysian Exchange fell for the fourth consecutive session on Friday, January 17, 2025, and were poised for a third consecutive weekly decline due to sluggish demand from India and falling vegetable oil prices on the Dalian Exchange.
The April 2025 palm oil futures contract on the Malaysian Derivatives Exchange fell by RM 42 per ton, or about 1%, to RM 4,144 (US$ 921.09) per metric ton at midday. The contract hit its lowest level in over three months at the beginning of the session, down 4.67% for the week.
"The decline in imports from India is a major concern for the palm oil market, especially as competition intensifies with cheaper soybean and rapeseed oils, which are attracting demand," said a trader based in Mumbai.
India's palm oil imports have dropped to their lowest level in nearly five years in January 2025 due to negative refining margins caused by high palm oil prices compared to other vegetable oils, prompting consumers to prefer soybean oil due to its more competitive pricing, government and industry officials told Reuters.
The most active Dalian soybean oil contract fell by 1.84%, while the palm oil contract dropped by 1.31%. Soybean oil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade rose by 0.68%.
