InfoSAWIT, KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) standard MS2530:2022, known as MSPO 2.0, officially came into effect on January 1, 2025. This new standard introduces stricter guidelines for sustainability, traceability, and ethical practices in palm oil production.
In an official statement, MSPO explained that MSPO 2.0 is an enhancement of the standard first introduced in 2013. The new standard adopts more comprehensive requirements aligned with global demands for responsible environmental, social, and corporate governance practices.
Since its introduction, MSPO certification has been central to Malaysia's commitment to transparency and sustainability. Certification audits are conducted by accredited independent agencies to ensure high integrity standards.
According to MSPO, improvements in MSPO 2.0 include new measures to strengthen responsible palm oil management. The standard also introduces a more comprehensive supply chain traceability mechanism and mandatory certification for traders, making the entire supply chain more transparent and ethical.
Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, stated that MSPO 2.0 reflects Malaysia's proactive steps to ensure its palm oil remains synonymous with sustainability in the global market.
"Through this updated standard, we are not only protecting the future of Malaysia's palm oil industry but also continuing to set benchmarks at the international level," he said, as quoted by InfoSAWIT from Bharian.com on Friday, January 3, 2024.
MSPO 2.0 is seen as a response to the increasing global demand for sustainable palm oil products. As one of the world's major palm oil producers, Malaysia hopes this standard will strengthen its position as a leader in the sustainability-based industry.
With the implementation of this new standard, Malaysia reinforces its commitment to balancing economic, social, and environmental needs while ensuring local palm oil remains recognized and valued in the global market. (T2)
