Bakrie Oil Palm Seed Supports Sustainability and Productivity of Palm Oil Plantations in Indonesia

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - As one of the leading producers of superior oil palm seeds in Indonesia, PT ASD-Bakrie Oil Palm Seed is committed to producing high-yielding oil palm seeds to boost the productivity of farmers' palm oil plantations.

In the palm oil industry, the use of high-quality superior seeds is a key factor for the success of plantations, especially in Indonesia, the world's leading producer of palm oil. The President Director of PT ASD-Bakrie Oil Palm Seed, Andi W. Setianto, expressed his view that superior seeds are essential for building sustainable and productive palm oil plantations.

As a national producer of superior oil palm seeds, PT ASD-Bakrie Oil Palm Seed is dedicated to producing seeds that can enhance the productivity of palm oil plantations, particularly for palm oil farmers. Despite the proven benefits of superior seeds in increasing production, many farmers still rely on inferior or uncertified seeds, which they acquire at lower prices but with the risk of suboptimal harvests. Andi explained that using certified seeds can increase palm oil production by more than double.

"If farmers use superior oil palm seeds, productivity can reach 5 to 6 tons of CPO (Crude Palm Oil) per hectare per year. Currently, the average productivity of farmers is only around 2 tons of CPO per hectare per year. This is unfortunate, considering that developing palm oil plantations takes a long time," Andi stated during the FGD SAWIT BERKELANJUTAN VOL 16 event titled "Sustainable Palm Oil Plantations Growing Rural Economy," organized by InfoSAWIT media with support from BPDPKS, in early November 2024, in Jakarta.

According to him, increasing productivity does not necessarily require expanding land but can be achieved through intensification by utilizing superior oil palm seeds. "Currently, the area of oil palm plantations in Indonesia reaches 16-17 million hectares, with about 42% managed by palm oil farmers. If they can utilize superior seeds, overall productivity will increase without the need to open new land," Andi added.

As a proven producer of superior oil palm seeds, PT ASD-Bakrie Oil Palm Seed offers seeds that have undergone certification by the Ministry of Agriculture. According to Andi, seeds from PT ASD-Bakrie can achieve productivity of up to 10 tons of CPO per hectare per year, with an oil extraction rate of 25% from the total fresh fruit bunches (TBS) produced per hectare.

"With good seeds, palm oil productivity can reach 40 tons of TBS per hectare per year, with a high oil extraction rate of around 25%," he explained. This figure is significantly higher than the average productivity of plantations using inferior seeds, which only manage to achieve 2-3 tons of CPO per hectare per year. (T2)
