InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – South Kalimantan has emerged as a successful region in implementing the integration of livestock and oil palm cultivation. This program not only reduces operational costs but also increases farmers' income by optimizing the use of palm oil land for cattle farming.
Wahyu Darsono, Manager of Ranch at PT Simbiosis Karya Agroindustri, explained that the rotational grazing system with electric fencing is a key factor in the success of this program. "Previously, farmers had to patrol their fields to monitor their livestock. Now, with this system, cattle can be grazed in a scheduled and controlled manner," Wahyu stated during the International Webinar: Oil Palm Livestock Integration in South Kalimantan, attended by InfoSAWIT on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
This system allows cattle, such as cows, to graze in designated areas alternately, ensuring that the grass in the palm oil plantations is well-managed without damaging the crops. Additionally, the manure produced by the cattle is utilized as natural fertilizer, providing dual benefits for farmers. "Cattle manure becomes a nutrient-rich fertilizer for palm oil, improving soil quality and enhancing crop yields," Wahyu added.
Furthermore, Wahyu noted that this integration not only reduces land management costs but also opens up additional income opportunities. Farmers benefit not only from palm oil yields but also from the livestock they raise. "Income increases from both palm oil harvests and cattle sales," he revealed.
The integration of livestock and palm oil has had a significant positive impact, particularly in terms of efficiency and income diversification. This program also promotes sustainability in the agricultural sector by combining the benefits of both fields. The government and relevant stakeholders are expected to continue supporting this innovation to expand its application beyond South Kalimantan to other regions in Indonesia. (T2)
