InfoSAWIT, RIAU – The Ministry of Environment (KLH) is encouraging the use of methane gas derived from palm oil mill effluent (POME) to help Indonesia meet its climate targets and advance its burgeoning carbon trading scheme.
During a visit to a palm oil company in Pelalawan Regency, Riau, on Saturday, Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, highlighted the critical importance of methane utilization, particularly for electricity generation, due to its significant environmental benefits.
"Methane production from Indonesia's palm oil industry is substantial. Studies indicate that approximately 500 crude palm oil (CPO) mills generate nearly 900,000 tons of methane annually. When converted to carbon dioxide equivalents, this amounts to around 36 million tons of CO2," Hanif said, as quoted by InfoSAWIT from Antara on Monday (November 25, 2024).
Methane, produced from organic waste, has a global warming potential 25 times greater than carbon dioxide. Capturing and utilizing methane can yield energy in the form of electricity or fuel, while simultaneously reducing harmful environmental impacts.
Hanif emphasized that harnessing this potential could significantly contribute to Indonesia's climate targets and bolster its international reputation. "By optimizing methane utilization, we not only support our climate objectives but also position Indonesia as a leader in sustainability practices," he added.
To ensure effective implementation, the ministry is drafting a roadmap for methane utilization, including mechanisms for incentives and penalties. The plan also takes into account the varying capacities of palm oil companies to adopt this initiative.
Moreover, methane utilization aligns with the government’s push to expand carbon trading opportunities, allowing industries to monetize sustainable practices.
"This effort requires both acceleration and a phased approach, as the schemes implemented may vary across different levels. We are collaboratively developing this framework," Hanif explained.
By capturing methane emissions and converting them into energy, the palm oil industry can play a significant role in reducing Indonesia's greenhouse gas emissions. Initiatives like this are expected to support national climate commitments while fostering sustainability in one of the country’s key economic sectors. (T2)
