InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA — In a significant stride toward a sustainable energy future, Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has officially partnered with the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) and an Implementing Agreement (IA). The signing ceremony was led by ESDM Secretary-General Dadan Kusdiana and AFD’s Indonesia Director Yann Martress at the ESDM Secretariat General Office in Jakarta on Friday.
Dadan Kusdiana expressed that the partnership represents a key milestone in the joint efforts of Indonesia and France to confront climate change and facilitate an effective energy transition. “As a country highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, Indonesia recognizes the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, diversify energy sources, and expedite the transition to sustainable energy. Through this collaboration, we hope to access cutting-edge technology, financial resources, and enhanced expertise in financing the energy transition,” stated Dadan, in an official statement quoted by InfoSAWIT, Sunday (10/11/2024).
Dadan extended his appreciation to AFD for their expertise in sustainable development and green finance, as well as for the European Union’s support in advancing Indonesia’s energy transition initiatives and bolstering human resource competency in achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) targets.
Yann Martress, AFD’s Indonesia Director, added that the partnership aims to mainstream energy transition within various policy frameworks and align efforts with Indonesia’s energy transition priorities. “This agreement marks a long-term partnership supporting Indonesia’s ambition to reach NZE and reinforces our commitment to creating a more environmentally resilient and sustainable energy sector,” he emphasized.
The European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei, Denis Chaibi, also highlighted the EU’s support, acknowledging Indonesia’s rich natural resources, including nickel reserves and geothermal potential. “Indonesia is a pivotal player in the global green transition. We are pleased to partner with Indonesia and AFD in this critical effort,” Chaibi remarked.
Laurent Legodec, the Deputy French Ambassador to Indonesia, underscored the opportunity to leverage both nations' strengths in advancing an equitable and sustainable energy future. “Through enhanced collaboration in energy transition, we are not only driving technological advancements but also fostering economic growth, job creation, and energy security,” he stated.
The LoI and IA between the ESDM and AFD encompass cooperation in energy transition reforms through the Policy-Based Loan Affordable and Sustainable Energy Transition (PBL ASET) program, studies and training for critical minerals, implementation of the Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) framework, and other areas of cooperation mutually agreed upon.
