InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Just like the commitment to sustainable practices, Bumitama Gunajaya Agro (BGA) keeps innovating in many business lines, such as, to support clean energy by constructing methane capture and implementing co-firing method.

BGA and Organics Bali recently did groundbreaking of methane capture project on 6 September 2024 at PT Karya Makmur Bahagia (BGA Group) in Central Kalimantan Province. The project could be operating in the midst of 2024 and could reduce carbon emission from palm oil mill effluent (POME) up to more than 40.000 tons CO2e or equal to captured emission about 1.400 trembesi trees in a year.

“In 2023, one methane capture of BGA operated in Riau Province and reduced total emission from the company up to 7%. Until now BGA operates as same as its sustainability policy that targets to reduce green-house gas (GHG) emission up to 30% in 2030,” Rieza Rakhman, Project Planning & Development Department Head Bumitama Gunajaya Agro, said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Friday (27/9/2024).

By co-firing method, the methane gas would substitute biomass fuel for the boilers in the mill. By applying enclosed flare system, the heat radiation and air from CO2 gas emission would reduce and it would potentially get carbon credit in the future. Besides, co-firing method would minimize the cost and increase the boilers’ productivity.

In 2024, BGA has constructing methane capture in three different places – two units in Central Kalimantan and one in West Kalimantan Province. Besides having the potential to increase the selling, the project would be about to deliver answers about the challenges to minimize GHG emission as it was regulated in Paris Agreement.

Prior, the subsidiary of BGA in Riau successfully took advantages on the gas from POME as the biogas power plant fuel to produce renewable electricity in the province. In the POME advantage scheme, BGA constructed methane capture to supply biogas powerplant Ujung Batu with 3 megawatt - capacity. (T2)
