Jurisdiction Certification: The Answer to ISPO Acceleration

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Chairman of Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS), Sabarudin said that the implementation of jurisdiction certification could be the solution to minimize the costs of certification process for the smallholders. The initiative could also help them, namely in finance, to get Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certificate.

“The certification would spend much, could be about Rp 4 million per hectare. But by implementing jurisdiction certification, we do hope the costs would be less,” he said in a dialogue with the theme “Percepatan Sertifikasi ISPO Bagi Para Pelaku Usaha Perkebunan Kelapa Sawit Melalui Pendekatan Yurisdiksi”, in the spare time of Bunex 2024 that InfoSAWIT attended at ICE BSD in the midst of September 2024.

Jurisdiction certification is the certification approach that would be implemented based on a certain administration region, such as, in the regency or province and would involve many parties, such as, the regional government and companies. The supports from Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (PO PFMA) and palm oil profit sharing would deliver the chance to implement this kind of certification and would help the smallholders to get cultivation documents.

Sabarudin also said some palm oil plantation regions started implementing verification and process to jurisdiction certification. The initiative would increase not only the smallholders’ competitiveness but also get the better synergy between the companies and the smallholders.

“We do hope the jurisdiction certification would be the effective model namely for the smallholders’ cooperation. The certification cost would be more affordable and the process would be more efficient,” he said.

He also mentioned some palm oil producer regencies in Indonesia started implemented the certification model. The regencies, the smallholders, and cooperation would be cooperating to implement it with every available standard.

In the long term, the jurisdiction certification would increase the smallholders’ welfare and reinforce their position in palm oil supply chain in the global level and would minimize the unemployment in palm oil plantation producer regions by increasing the access to many markets. (T2)
