1,3 Million Hectares Palm Oil Plantations in East Kalimantan Province Contributed to Reduce GHG Emission

InfoSAWIT, SAMARINDA – Palm oil plantations in East Kalimantan Province laid on about 1.345.364 hectares and significantly played its roles to minimize green-house gas (GHG) emission, and also minimize the warming globally.

Head of Plantation Agency East Kalimantan Province, Ence Achmad Rafiddin Rizal said, palm oil plantations in the province significantly help absorb carbon.

Data showed that of plantation business permits that laid on 2.317.795 hectares in total, 342 companies in the province got the permits to cultivate their areas. While the business rights covered upt 1.263.745 hectares of 240 business permits available.

"Palm oil plantations in East Kalimantan Province laid on about 1.345.364 hectares, they did consist of the main plantations about 971.271 hectares and plasma/smallholders about 373.212 hectares," Ence Achmad Rafiddin Rizal said, Monday in Samarinda.

He also mentioned, GHG emission would be a global scale – issue that should be responded seriously. Many countries would get the impacts, such as, Indonesia in East Kalimantan and it is the only province in this country that successfully implemented Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Carbon Fund, the initiative that focused on preventing deforestation and forest degradation. The World Bank did appreciate the program in the form of delivering award in performance – base.

As the province that implements sustainability principles in plantation development, Ence emphasized it would need the supports from every stakeholder both the smallholders and the companies to actively participate in reducing carbon emission. “Plantation businesses would absorb not only carbon but also produce emission, such as, from plantation operation, the vehicles, and production process in the mills,” he said, as InfoSAWIT quoted from Antara, Tuesday (10/9/2024).

Palm oil is taken as the commodity that keeps carbon significantly. He said, a palm oil mill with 60 tons per hour – production capacity could absorb about 199.620 tons of CO2 equivalent per year through the plantations.

For it absorbs carbon from the air and keeps it in the trees and soil, East Kalimantan Province should always play the significant roles to minimize GHG emission, maintain ecosystem balance, and increase the plantation productivity. (T2)
