Packs of Wild Elephants Broke Eight Hectares Palm Oil Plantations in Aceh Jaya

InfoSAWIT, ACEH JAYA – Eight hectares of palm oil plantations that belonged to the villagers of Gunong Meulinteng, Sub district of Panga, Regency of Aceh Jaya were broken because of wild elephants in the past four days.

"The packs of wild elephants are still around the villagers’ plantations. May be they could be about 30 elephants,” one unnamed villager of Gunong said, as InfoSAWIT quoted from Bithe, Sunday (18/6/2024).

The broken plantations are various. Some plantations were just planted, some only about 3 – 5 years old. The villager thought the wild elephants once got into and damaged the plantations but this damage even got worse.

“We reported it to the related authorities but they just came and took some pictures only,” the villager said. There was nothing to do besides giving some stalks of fireworks.

For the accident, the villagers got scared to do anything in their surroundings because of the wild elephants. They hoped the related parties could do something to get rid of the elephants and avoid conflicts between men and the animals.

This would be the concern for the villagers because palm oil is the only source of living for them. The villagers urged that the government would do concrete thing and solve the issue effectively and sustainably. (T2)
