Malaysia: Raided Stores that Sold Ice Cream with NPO

InfoSAWIT, PUTRAJAYA – Three convenient stores in three regions were raided by Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs because they sold food products that had ‘No Palm Oil/NPO’ in the plastic package. Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali confirmed that the raid would be the response from what the people told to the ministry.

The raid started at 11.45. The team of the ministry found ice cream products in many flavors with the writing ‘NPO’. The ice cream was sold at RM 897.60 and had been sealed to have next investigation. The case would also be investigated based on the Regulation of Trade Descriptions (Prohibition of Statement Use, Expressions or Indication) Palm Oil and Palm Oil Products) of 2022.

In the official statement of Minister Armizan, if the stores are found guilty, they would get fine up to RM 250.000 or put in jail not more than five years. The regulation has started since 15 March 2022 and after that, the ministry did conduct 5.057 inspection in the whole country and find four same cases.

Minister Armizan also emphasized that the ministry would firmly act to every importer, distributor, seller and related company if they sell import products which are against to the related regulations in Malaysia. Every violation covers the statement or expression that discriminates or boycott products that relate to palm oil, as the main commodity in the country.

“There would be firm action for every importer, distributor, seller or related company if they sell import products which are against to the related regulations,” he said, as InfoSAWIT quoted from Bernama, Thursday (9/5/2024). (T2)
