Facing Hoax: Reinforce Knowledges about Palm Oil

InfoSAWIT, KUALA LUMPUR – In the digital era that gets much developing, hoax would be a threat and could cause mass for individuals, institutions and industries in a whole. One main victim from hoax epidemic is the brand itself which always gets stuck in fake information (hoax) that would damage the reputation of the brand, and destroy the consumers’ trusts.

Hoax informed hiddenly, took advantages from social media, the title was clickbait, content went viral to spread fake information efficiently but in the same time, it concerned. Hoax exploited the weaknesses in online platform. Sensationalism is preferred to accuracy and wrong information could inform very fast.

One real sample in fake news was when a multi-national scale company in Hong Kong was the fraud victim for about US$ 25,6 million that applied deepfake technology. Many employers were manipulated through video conference and showed the sophistication of modern fraud.

Other sector that became the victim of fake and dangerous information was the myth about soft drink. It was said that it could damage teeth in just one night though many had denied it again and again. These meant, misinformation would last for some time.

Associate professor at Department of Post-graduate Study and Research in Housing and Department of Food and Nutrient Study, SNDT Womens University, Dr. Meena Mehta noted that it would be significant to fight misinformation about palm oil. “Informing fake news/information (about palm oil) would mislead not only consumers but also endanger palm oil industrial integrity. It is important for us to unite and uncover misinformation network,” Dr. Meena said, as InfoSAWIT quoted from networkknt.com, Monday (6/5/2024).

For palm oil industries, fake accusation about deforestation and labor exploitation would make the consumer boycott (the products) and would be having financial losses. It is important to separate facts and fiction but acknowledge the positive contribution from palm oil that was sustainable produced.

Palm oil which was sustainable produced, is environmental and delivering economic advantages. It grows in narrower areas and small resources than other vegetable oils. This economically supports innovation and development in tropical regions.

To encourage sustainable palm oil production through certification and initiatives, it emphasizes the commitment to realize responsible and environmental practices.

Though a whatsapp message went viral recently about palm oil fake claims, the research showed palm oil fat has neutral effects to heart if being consumed in a balanced diet. Palm oil has significant nutrients, such as, vitamin E and A that would support body immune and health in a whole.

Apart from the challenges about fake information and news or misinformation, the consumers, brands, and policy makers should always be aware to get the right information. By critically evaluating the information, supporting sustainable practices, and involving transparent dialogue, we would navigate the complexity in palm oil industries and open the potential to positive changes.
