Synergy: Escalate Carbon Credit Heading to Sustainable Palm Oil Plantations

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – For palm oil plantation governance is not perfect yet, Lembaga Pertahanan Nasional Indonesian Republic (Lemhanas RI) concerns about it. The institution proposed to get collaboration and improvement by conducting seminar grup diskusi (SGD) with the theme "Strategi Pengembangan Perkebunan Kelapa Sawit yang Berkelanjutan Guna Meningkatkan Kredit Karbon dan Mengurangi Emisi Gas Rumah Kaca."

It was conducted by Yayasan Bentang Merah Putih and Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (PFMA) and also Lemhanas RI at the hall of Dwiwarna, Lemhanas that InfoSAWIT attended in Jakarta, Monday (29/4/2024).

In his speech, Vice Governor of Lemhanas RI, Letjen TNI Eko Margiyono, M.A., emphasized that it would be significant to support sustainable palm oil plantations as part of pillar of economy in this country. He thought this would be the significant contributor to get defense, particularly in economy in national scale.

Meanwhile, Deputy of Strategic Study, Lemhanas RI, Professor Reni Mayerni mentioned seven recommendations in sustainable palm oil plantations to escalate carbon credit and in the same time, to reduce green-house gas (GHG) emission.

They are about to escalate area/plantation availability, research and innovation technology application, escalating competition by having branding, palm oil carbon – data mastery and management, effective supervision and law enforcement, escalating people’s welfare, and cooperation among institutions.

To deliver the real information and facts about palm oil plantations, Chairman of Yayasan Bentang Merah Putih, Yohana E. Hardjadinata hoped that the discussion would also deliver the better understanding to produce film with the theme "Story about Us: Palm’s Love,". This would be part of palm oil soft diplomacy in and from Indonesia and how palm oil plays its parts in carbon trade and GHG reduction.

Indonesia, as the biggest palm oil producer in the world, and the third contributor in GHG in the world, should significantly play its roles in carbon dioxide emission management in the globe.

But there are debates if palm oil plantations would reduce or escalate carbon dioxide emission, namely because of new planting because it has had something to do with deforestation.

It is important to get sustainable palm oil plantation development approach to minimize GHG emission but in the same time, it escalates carbon credit.

“The approach should also prioritize environmental and social palm oil production. By implementing the strategies in degraded areas, it is hoped, Indonesia would get the welfare of low carbon, maintain natural diversity, carbon backup, and escalate the local’s welfare,” Yohana said. (T2)
