InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – In 2018, palm oil plantation sector in Riau Province significantly got wider and more in the width and crude palm oil (CPO) production based on land used data. The larger plantation and more production happened for palm oil plantation administrator expansion and caused the areas laid about 2,71 million hectares.

But in 2019 to 2022, there was no significant change in the width, still from land used data. The projection in 2022 showed palm oil plantations laid on about 2,87 million hectares in the province.

Data of Buku Statistik Kelapa Sawit Provinsi Riau 2022 published by Central Bureau of Statistic, Riau Province, CPO production in the province reached 8,74 million tons. “Though the plantations did not significantly get wider, CPO production remained high,” it was written as InfoSAWIT quoted from.

It is important to know that the 2022 palm oil plantation expansion in Riau was still dominated by the smallholders that reached 61,44 percent or about 1,76 million hectares. The big private plantation mastered about 35,94 percent or 1,03 million hectares, while the rests about 2,62 percent or 0,08 million hectares were mastered by the government’s plantations.

Though there was no significant change in land mastery, it is important to keep monitoring palm oil development in the province knowing that the impact would be bigger for the environment and economy in the region.
