To Fulfill NZE, Indonesia Still Depends on Palm Oil Biodiesel

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - Indonesia has to work harder to fulfill net zero emission (NZE) in energy sector in 2060. It needs breakthroughs from every party to optimize bioenergy development as the energy transition strategy from fossil energy to environmental and renewable energy.

That was the conclusion from a webinar with the theme “Potensi dan Tantangan Pengembangan Bioenergi dalam Kontribusi pada Capaian Target Net Zero Emission 2060”, Thursday, 9 November 2023. The interactive discussion was held by Pimpinan Pusat Kesatria Muda Respublika (PP KMR) and Yayasan Bangkit Energi Indonesia Hijau (BENIH).

Chairman of PP KMR, Iwan Bento Wijaya said that bioenergy development in one significant strategy from the government in energy transition to fulfill the commitment in Paris Agreement to reduce green-house gas (GHG) emission in the globe.

37 years – the period for Indonesia to realize NZE in 2060 would be fast in the context of energy transition. Though bioenergy is in very big potential in this country, but it is not optimally taken for advantages still.

Data from Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource (MEMR) showed that new renewable energy potential which is abundant up to 3.687 gigawatt (GW), consists of sun, hydro, bioenergy, wind, thermal, uranium, and thorium. New renewable potential would be very big. They are in many places. “Our bioenergy could produce vegetable oil (biofuel), such as, biodiesel bioethanol, biogas, and liquid biomass. But we just took for advantages 0,3% from the available potential,” researcher in Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC), Akhmad Hanan said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT recently.

He continued, the government published many regulations in energy nationally, for instance, biodiesel mandatory program. Akhmad thought, the government successfully implements it. “We could see the achievement from bioenergy for new renewable energy. It is very significant through biodiesel mandatory which has been running since 2016 until now,” he said.

In Indonesia, biodiesel material is from crude palm oil (CPO). Of about 50 million tons CPO production per year, biodiesel needs reached about 7,5 million tons. This escalated the smallholders’ income directly because they cultivated about 40% of total palm oil plantations in Indonesia.

Data from MEMR also showed that biodiesel mandatory program successfully reduce green – house gas (GHG) emission significantly and delivered increasing economic advantages. “To reduce GHG, biodiesel mandatory program that started from B20 to be B35 this year, made bioenergy contribute bigger than it in other programs,” Akhmad said.

He hoped that the latest regulation, which is, President’s Regulation Number 112 / 2022 about New Renewable Energy Development Acceleration for Powerplant Procurement would accelerate energy transition significantly. “Bioenergy target in powerplant in 2060 would reach 60 GW (Target NZE) but the reality in 2023, it just reached about 3 GW. That is why it needs more efforts,” he said. (T2)
