PTPN III and PLN: Encourage Renewable Energy in Palm Oil Industries

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – PT Perkebunan Nusantara PTPN III (Persero) and PT PLN (Persero) signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 8 November 2023 to escalate renewable energy powerplant, namely through Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) for mill and through advantaging renewable energy.

It was attended by Director of Production and Development PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (Persero), Mahmudi and Director of Retail and Commerce PT PLN, Edi Srimulyanti. They officially signed the MoU in Jakarta.

In his speech, Mahmudi said that the MoU would the starting point for the companies to reinforce cooperation in providing electricity in the mills of PTPN Group, escalate renewable energy advantages. Until now 8 of 68 mills of PTPN Group use powerplants from PT PLN within about 1.700 to 2.175 kVA in their production.

“That is why it is hoped the powerplant in PTPN Group would be registered as source of renewable energy,” he said, as InfoSAWIT quoted from the official statement in Jakarta.

Mahmudi also mentioned that the powerplant from palm oil plantations in the mills, the shell production would be as the alternative substitution of coal with PT PLN. By the collaboration, PT PLN would support powerplant supply to mills of PTPN Group through priority service program to confirm the process running smooth.

In this context, PT PLN would publish renewable energy certificate (REC) to support environment, social, and governance (ESG) in PTPN Group. Mahmudi also told that PTPN III cooperates with others to operate biomass powerplants and palm oil biomass within the total capacity 27 megawatt (MW) which the materials from POME and empty bunch from the mills.

Edi Srimulyanti representing Director of PT PLN (Persero), Darmawan Prasodjo said that the collaboration is the way of the company to accelerate energy transition and support the government’s target to realize net zero emission in 2060. Edi mentioned that green energy is the obligation of need that should start now to get fresh air and green environment for the future generations.

The cooperation between PTPN III and PT PLN would cover powerplant procurement for mills, publish REC to support ESG program in PTPN II, share knowledge in renewable energy use.

Edi was optimist that the collaboration would encourage PTPN Group to manage about68 mill within capacity about 2.960 tons per hour. It means, nowadays production that reached 2,8 million ton per year would escalate in efficient costs. (T2)
