Strategies to Select Palm Oil Seeds for Smallholders and Big Plantation (Companies)

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - Selecting palm oil seeds would be very significant thing to do because it is the main modal to get maximally palm oil production. That is why it needs to be aware and knowing every supporting factor.

the basic thing to select palm oil seeds for the smallholders is that they have palm oil mill or not. Knowing that smallholders (independent ones), small scale palm oil plantation mostly do not have mill(s), the orientation is the fresh fruit bunch by keep noticing yield productivity.

If the smallholders need the weigh only, they could plant the Dura for having big bunches but in low yield. The outcome would be cheaper to sell. Big palm oil plantation companies that have mill, of course, would orient to yield because of crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel oil (PKO) to sell. The groups according to plantation productivity are classified in Table 1.

Specific information about palm oil seeds technically is not complete. That is why data provided could be improved. But the lists could be as temporarily guidance. Of 68 varieties released, we only have had 40 varieties only and summarized in Table 2.

Of 40 varieties that have available information, at least, there are 14 palm oil seed producers. The varieties are superior in fresh fruit bunch (FFB) productivity. It is said ‘superior’ if the potential FFB production is categorized into class B, T, and TS, which means, the average production reaches more than 30 tons per hectare per year. Every seed is the cross of D X P. The difference is the mother tree. There are semicolons that the mother tree was developed by applying tissue culture.

If potential FFB productivity could reach > 30 tons per hectare per year in average and the field realization reached 24 tons (80%), it means, the cultivation ran good but the productivity could actually be escalated to be 30 % or 31,2 tons/hectare/year by applying specific agronomy technology. If the potential FFB production could reach 35 tons/hectare/year, but the field realization reached 28 tons, it is good enough but could be escalated to be 36,4 tons/hectare/year.

Varieties that have superiority and productivity of yield (CPO & PKO) are produced by 15 producers. Dear readers can see at Table 3. It differentiates the good, and height.

If potential productivity reaches > 7,6 tons/hectare/year in average and the field realization reaches 6 tons of yield (80%), it means, the cultivation ran well but the productivity could be escalated 30 % to be 7,8 tons/hectare/year by using specific agronomic technology and the productivity should be improved in the first place.
