Palm Oil Breeders Established PIPPSI: Agree to Develop Plasma Nutfah Sawit

InfoSAWIT, BALI – For many issues relating to palm oil breeding, there is no organization still to develop palm oil variety and breeding that accommodate many breeders, and breeding practitioners to discuss and share experiences about many issues in breeding. These are the basic to establish Perhimpunan Ilmu Pemuliaan dan Perbenihan Sawit Indonesia (PIPPSI).

It was declared on 13 March 2023 at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center as series of Palm Oil Breeding Workshop which Konsorsium Plasma Nutfah Kelapa Sawit Indonesia conducted.

The declaration of PIPPSI was attended by 8 (eight) initiators and 55 participants of Breeding Workshop. They are mostly palm oil breeders from many palm oil breeding institutions.

Konsorsium Plasma Nutfah Kelapa Sawit Indonesia is one forum. It consists of 18 breeding companies in this country and the Government of Indonesia would do prospective and introduction activity about germplasm. It has been running since 2008 and the result of the prospect has got germplasm from Cameron, Angola, and Ecuador.

Chairman of Palm Oil Producer Seed Cooperation Forum, Dwi Asmono said, it is admitted or not, it needs an independent institution to gather ideas and thoughts. “This would be the collaboration among breeders,” he said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Wednesday (13/3/2023).

Coordinator of Konsorsium Plasma Nutfah Kelapa Sawit, Tony Liwang told and hoped that the organization would contribute and play its roles in international level, accommodate breeders from other countries.

Senior Oil Palm Breeder di Indonesia, Abdul Razak Purba hoped that the organization and workshop in Bali would sustainably run and the breeders both individually and in groups could share ideas and thoughts openly.

Researcher from PT Socfin Indonesia, Indra Syahputra hoped that the organization could survive and the early sprit should always exist to solve every breeding issues (in the future). (T2)
