Time for Young Generations to Advocate Palm Oil through Social Media

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – It is undeniable that negative campaigns in palm oil has something to do with vegetable oil markets in the globe. There are some issues raising up in the black campaigns, such as, deforestation because of forest land use change to be palm oil plantations, the loss of animal habitat, health issues, climate change, and some others.

Senior Vice President Communication and Public Affairs PT. Astra Agro Lestari Tbks (AAL), Tofan Mahdi said, palm oil is one main plantation commodity that delivers exchange for Indonesia that reached 25% from the National Budget.

Palm oil is the threat for other vegetable oil, such as, sunflower, corn, olive and rapeseed oil. Palm oil has the highest productivity of all vegetable oils. To get the same numbers of production in palm oil, other vegetable oils should be planted in wider areas. “Besides palm oil is sustainable because it could produce up to 25 years,” he said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Saturday (17/9/2022).

Unfortunately, the social media, such as, Twitter still corners palm oil and less discusses about the positive campaigns about the positive facts in palm oil plantations. This could be happening for the young generations are not active in the issues globally when discussing palm oil because every discussion is mostly in English.

Tofan took the students of INSTIPER to fight for the negative campaigns in palm oil. “Let us tell palm oil plantations notice sustainability from the cultivation and the process in many companies or personally because we have to have Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certificate which is regulated in the President’s Regulation Number 44 / 2020,” he said.

Tofan also mentioned, let us tell the people that palm oil operational answered sustainable development goals (SDGs) in point 17.

To deliver spirits for the students that the students would do advocation in palm oil through social media, PT. Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. Challenged them to make contents in the form of video IG Reel or Tiktok with the theme “Manfaat kelapa sawit untuk kehidupan sehari-hari”.

Ten people with the best video would get the next challenge, which is, make a content with the theme “Apa yang akan terjadi jika tidak ada sawit di kehidupan kita”. The winners would get one handphone. (T2)
