PPKS: Smallholders Are Trapped in Planting Fake Seeds

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – According to the survey by Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS) it was revealed that the smallholders are still trapped by planting the fake or uncertified seeds. There are some reasons why they did it, such as, 37 percent of them were the victims of fraud, 14 percent of them were interested in the cheap price, 20% of them did not know where to buy legal or superior seeds. Besides, 12 percent of them were trapped by planting fake seeds because of the complicated conditions to buy superior seeds. 10 percent did not know where to buy superior seeds, and 4 percent of them told, it took a while to buy superior seeds to the legal seed producers.

EVP Plasma PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) V, Arief Subhan thought, based on the plan of CEO PTPN V, Jatmiko Santosa, PTPN V would operate seven palm oil producer centers which particularly sell the superior seeds for the independent smallholders, they are, in Air Molek District of Indragiri Hulu, Tandun and Sei Rokan District of Rokan Hulu, Dumai City, and Sei Pagar District of Kampar.

“To solve the issues, as what Mister Jatmiko told, in the early of 2021 and for the first time in our history, we decided to release and sell superior seeds which for all these years we planted in our main and plasma plantations, and we sold online to the independent smallholders,” Arief said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT recently.

He also mentioned, in 2022 PTPN V would prepare at least 400.000 superior palm oil seeds for the plasma and independent smallholders. The numbers decreased from 1,1 million seeds compared to the first time when the program launched. (T2)
