The Smallholders Support the Attorney to Sue Illegal Deforestation Suspects

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The smallholders in Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS) did appreciate and support the firm law enforcement by the Attorney by deciding Surya Darmadi, in the case of bribe corruption of forestry function change in the Province of Riau to Ministry of Forestry and Environment. The case also dragged the former Governor of Riau, Annas Maamun to jail.

For information in the early August 2022, the Attorney decided Surya Darmadi as the suspect of corruption assumption that cultivate about 37.095 hectares in Riau. The country could be getting loss for about Rp 78 billion. Besides the Attorney decided him as the suspect of money laundry assumption.

General Secretary of SPKS, Mansuetus Darto said, what the Attorney did needs appreciation for saving the country from the biggest lost in corruption in forestry sector. “This should be the moment for the government to get the same law enforcement to many other illegal cases in forestry sector namely in palm oil plantation centers (regions),” he said as in the press release that InfoSAWIT, got, Thursday (18/8/2022).

He also mentioned the case like this always involved the big capitalist and officials by using their authority to do corruption in forestry sector or to develop palm oil plantations.

The forest encroachment like this is a latent issue in the both sector and it is time to get law enforcement and firmly sue every forest and environment damagers which still happen until now. Law enforcement is needed to improve the better future governance in forestry sector and in developing palm oil plantations.

“Besides preventing corruption practices that harm up to billions of rupiah for the country, law enforcement would deliver effect to recover the bad images in forestry sector and palm oil development in Indonesia which could be not sustainable because the production derived from illegal deforestation namely in big scale forest regions,” he said.
