Governor of Riau to Minister of Agriculture: Expensive Fertilizers but Cheap FFB

InfoSAWIT, PEKANBARU – For the fertilizers are still very expensive while fresh fruit bunch (FFB) is still cheap, Riau Province through its governor sent official documents to Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL) by hoping to get solution about everything.

Governor of Riau, Syamsuar hoped, SYL could re-view the fertilizer prices for palm oil plantations. In fact, the smallholders in the province complained about the very expensive fertilizers which are not equal to their harvest costs.

“We told some to Minister of Agriculture about the smallholders’ cheap FFB in the past several months or since the CPO export ban,” he wrote in his official documents that InfoSAWIT got, Thursday (11/8/2022)

Syamsuar also wrote, the smallholders cannot avoid the expensive fertilizers while the subsidized fertilizers are not available anymore for them to escalate their plantation production.

In the official documents with the number 526/Disbun/3686 about Fertizer Price Review for Palm Oil Plantation, at least, there are four significant points delivered to Minister of Agriculture. The first, the expensive fertilizer becomes the heavy burden to many smallholders when their FFB is still cheap.

The second, the limits of smallholders’ buying capacity to fulfill the fertilizer would impact to the palm oil cultivation which is not standard for the smallholders’ level.

The third, there is no policy or regulation to deliver subsidized fertilizers for the smallholders.

The fourth, the next impact by having no fertilizer application would decrease the next FFB production and this would influence the income of the smallholders and eventually would escalate the numbers of poverty.

"Taking into account these conditions, we hope that the Minister of Agriculture can consider efforts to reduce fertilizer prices at the level of oil palm growers or the existence of subsidized fertilizer policies that are also given to smallholder," Syamsuar noted in his official documents. (T2)
