Jokowi Saw Red Palm Cooking Oil Production in PPKS Medan

InfoSAWIT, MEDAN – The innovation of red palm cooking oil by Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS) Medan triggered President Joko Widodo’s attention. In his two day – visit in North Sumatera Province, Wednesday to Thursday (6-7 July 2022), he directly saw the research process in PPKS Medan on Jalan Brigjen Katamso. Kelurahan Kampung Baru, Kota Medan, Thursday (7/7/2022).

From the official statement that InfoSAWIT got, Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo; Minister of Cooperation Small Medium Business, Teten Masduki; Minister of Secretary, Pratikno; Ministry of Public Work and People’s Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono; and Governor of North Sumatera, Edy Rahmayadi were with him.

Prior Teten Masduki, Edy Rahmayadi, and Mayor of Medan, Bobby Nasution, and some others visited and saw the production of red palm cooking oil by PPKS.

For information, red palm cooking oil is the innovation in palm oil which is potentially used or consumed as functional food to prevent stunting in the society.

“Red palm cooking oil functions not only to fry but also be the supplement for the people not to get stunting issues. The nutrients in red palm cooking oil is more than the average palm cooking oil in the markets,” Head of PPKS Medan, Edwin Lubis said, as in the official statement to President Joko Widodo.

Lubis thought, the advantage of red palm cooking oil is in the nutrients and what is in pro vitamin A and E which is higher than it in general palm cooking oil. In the production process, Lubis continued, PPKS Medan used simple technology to maintain the nutrients in it.

“The advantages in red palm cooking oil are in the nutrients and Vitamin A and E which are higher. We prioritize the nutrients in the process,” he said. The cooperation, micro, small, and medium businesses can apply the technology because it spent smaller investment than those in commerce. Besides, he continued, the logistic cost is smaller to produce red palm cooking oil.

“By having it, there would be buildings in palm oil plantation centers or villages and it would be cheaper because there is cost to get the logistics,” he said. It needs to educate and socialize about the advantages of red palm cooking oil for the people because it is different in color with general palm cooking oil. He also asked for the supports to help the socialization of the innovation which could be one solution to fulfill nutrients for the people in Indonesia. “Of course, we hope the supports from every stakeholder to socialize the red palm cooking oil,” he said.
