InfoSAWIT, WEST KALIMANTAN– Access to get clean water and sanitation in many villages in Indonesia is still a challenge (to solve). In West Kalimantan Province, according to Central Bureau of Statistic, less than 70% of the people get good sanitation in the province. Access to get clean water for the people is a notice because many families should walk further to get it in their daily activity. Besides it is a common thing to defecate in open space in many villages and this is risky to pollute sources of water that the people consume and could increase the disease from the water and be bad for the people’s welfare.
For the reasons, Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food launched a project called, WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene/Air, Sanitation and Cleanse) in West Kalimantan Province to answer the challenges of better sanitation and clean water in the province. The sanitation installation, clean water flows, and safe water filter to be consumed would be finished in July 2022.
The WASH project in Village of Sentabai would deliver advantages for more than 80 families and 4 schools. The project is in cooperation with Safe Water Garden (SWG) which is full of experiences to develop people’s capacity in WASH micro (family-sharing system) in Indonesia, namely in Sumatera and Java.
“The access flowing water, safe water, better cleanse and sanitation in our concession areas are important to make sure that the people are better and healthy. After succeeding implementing sanitation system for the people in Belitung in the previous project, we know that access to the flowing water and safe water to drink are the notice in many regions,” Director of Sustainability and Strategic Projects, Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, Götz Martin said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Friday (24/6/2022).
The sanitation system has four main components, they are, close tank, absorption, pipe system that connects inter-parts, and separated kitchen sink. The system which is economic is easy to construct and would help the sanitation issues in the village.
The other important part of the project is to provide flowing water. In average the families in many villages in Indonesia including in Sentabai spend much time to take water for their daily needs. The program would directly flow water to the people and escalate the efficiency of the people to get water.
Besides the water filter - Nazava would be installed to guarantee that the water is safe for the family. By the infiltration system, each family could spend their cost to buy mineral water, liquid petroleum gas, or electricity to boil water for some time.
CEO Safe Water Gardens, Marc Van Loo said, WASH develops not only water and sanitation facilitation to be better but also train the people about effective ways to encourage better lives and get food plantation. “I am very happy and excited to continue the cooperation with Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food because we have the same commitment to empower the villagers,” Marc Van Loo said.
